We all know how time consuming and frustrating it can be trying to navigate your way around some of the larger airports in the UK, and London Gatwick is no exception. As the second largest and second busiest airport in the UK- handling more than 45 million passengers last year alone- they recognised that this is a real passenger concern and collaborated with UK startup, Pointr, to create an Augmented Reality (AR) solution to the problem.

In 2017, London Gatwick Airport installed 2,000 Bluetooth beacons around the interior of the airport in order to facilitate the AR wayfinding technology and intuitive maps that guide passengers through the airport, onto their new passenger-facing app.

The AR app is the first instalment of Gatwick’s ‘digital transformation’ programme, along with their cloud-based Flight Information System. They have several more digital tools to introduce, including advanced chat bots.

Cathal Corcoran, Chief Information Officer of Gatwick Airport said of the technology:
“I would like to congratulate Gatwick’s IT team for their hard work and effort getting these innovations over the line and also our partners, Mobile 5 who designed the passengers facing app, and AirportLabs who built VisionAir flight information display screens.
“These awards come at an exciting time for IT innovation at Gatwick as we are transforming the way that airport information is communicated. We will soon connect passengers to intelligent chat bots using Facebook Messenger, Skype, and other popular apps and our 2000 wayfinding beacons have the capability to enable augmented reality wayfinding for passengers, making it easier to navigate the airport’s two terminal buildings.
“We have also just future proofed our entire IT network for the next decade so that we can take advantage of the latest technologies, while also making the network more resilient and tolerant to disruption.”

At Peel Interactive, we have experience of providing bespoke mobile applications with integrated Augmented Reality technology.
One of our most recent projects is currently in use on the Marella Discovery and Discovery 2 cruise ships; an app for families and children that is used in conjunction with 15 permanently displayed markers throughout the ship, which trigger AR in the form of a fun animated character. The user is then able to play a game, receive a fun new informative fact and is given a riddle to solve in order to find the next location.
