Hoghton Tower


The owners of Hoghton Tower, a fortified manor in Lancashire, UK, approached Peel Interactive to create an infographic to educate visitors on the building’s fascinating history, whilst also increasing accessibility for those with limited mobility.

We created a multimedia digital solution to bring the history of this centuries-old family home to life, to increase visitor engagement and give access to those unable to take advantage of the guided tours.

Through creative scoping meetings with the client, it was decided that a 2D video animated infographic would provide the most engaging and effective solution, as it would allow for a fascinating interpretation of a long history whist also encouraging relatively short dwell time.


We devised a solution using a mixture of 2D animation, voice-overs and filmed actors from the local community and school, which guides visitors through some of the Tower’s significant historical moments. These were to include numerous family members’ stories, the property’s connection with Shakespeare and the story of King James I’s historic visit to Hoghton.

A community film
In all we filmed four different scenes, including period reconstructions and an interview with the current owner, Sir Bernard De Hoghton.

For many scenes, instead of professional actors, we chose to feature members of the Hoghton community, to give local people the opportunity to be actively engaged with the project. Our location film crew included directors, producers and videographers and our wardrobe team sourced some amazing period costumes. In the finished film, with the backdrop of the ancient house, visitors now feel they have really stepped back in time.

A smart product for increased engagement

A priority for the project was for the video-animated infographic to allow those who cannot participate in a full tour of the home to experience the rest of the home virtually, a feature which our solution delivered successfully in the most imaginative ways.

Peel Interactive procured and installed the optimum touch screen kiosk for this venue and packaged it with our bespoke kiosk software and targeted content. Also included was a mechanism to take the results from an interactive visitor satisfaction survey and store them both locally and online depending on connectivity.
